Return from the dead…

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Well, I haven’t really been dead. It just seems like it because I haven’t posted in so long. And after spending a week lugging boxes of books down from my parents’ attic, I feel kind of almost dead anyway… But I am back now, and have some good news in the publishing side of things!

First of all, Deborah Lee Rose, who wrote the 12 Days series, has written a book called “Twas Right Before Recess” and I have been asked to do the illustrations for it, yay! It is about a spelling bee, and reading, and all that good stuff.

Second, and most exciting for me, is that my story “Ten Creepy Monsters” has been accepted by Abrams, whee! A book about monsters and not kids! Not that I don’t like kids, but I do love monsters….  I have a year to complete the art for monsters, and another couple of months to have the spelling bee finished, so it will be a busy year, but that is a good thing!

And finally, Miss Tutu’s Star is available for pre-order now on Amazon. You can find it here!

In etsy news, I have listed a new muppet print – Gonzo (the Magnificent) You can check it out here.

And I have also listed one of my higher-end sculptures on etsy – I’ve never tried listing a fairly expensive item like this before, but other people do so I thought I’d give it a try. Up now is a Slug Angel of Love,

and soon I will be adding the Slug Angel of Doom. Who knows, maybe they will sell! Stranger things have happened.

Thanks to everyone for coming to visit my daughter Erin and me at the spring open studios at Salmon Falls Mills! We had a great turnout, and were even interviewed by a nice fellow from artspider.net. I hesitate to post this because I sound pretty dumb, but here it is, ugh, haha!

And that’s all for now, folks! I’ll try to be better about this… but that’s what I always say……..

Back again!

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Oh boy, a long time since I posted last! Sorry about that. Let’s try again. So the last time I was working on Miss Tutu’s Star, written by Leslea Newman. That is at the  press right now, and will be out next fall. And the cover is going to have sparkles!! I am very excited about that!

In not so happy book news, three of my books have recently gone out of print, boooo. That means that I can’t order them anymore, so if you see a copy of Prudy’s Problem, Happy Bees, or Seymour Slug, snap it up!  It may be your last chance!

In more happy book news, things are looking (dare I say?) positive for a new story I have written called “Ten Creepy Monsters.” I am waiting to hear from my editor, but his initial reaction was good…

Upcoming events include a school visit next week, and our spring open studio day in May – May 8th to be exact. Mark your calendars.

In Etsy news, my “Yeti Loves His Lederhosen” was featured in their “keep it weird” section – thanks, guys! You can check it out here. Yeti got a lot of hearts from that, yaay!

I just got back from The Big City, where I saw the Tim Burton exhibit at MOMA -fantastic! I loved seeing his early influences and  how he took off on his own weird tangent. And of course the movie props were great!

We also went to the fabulous Brooklyn Botanic Garden. It was a lovely sunny day, and there were actually flowers blooming outside! After all this dreary rainy weather we’ve been having up here in the northeast, it was a welcome sight indeed.

And to top of off a great trip, our hotel was right down the street from my favorite building – the Chrysler Building. A lovely sight day or night!

Finally, I just have to throw in this cute cat picture of Tom watching a little black toad on tv!

Once again, I will try to be more active in my posting!

One monkey and a whole lotta bears

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Well, in case anyone has been wondering where the heck I’ve been and why I haven’t posted here in months, here is the reason:

bears4.jpg

yes, I have been making bears, bears and more bears! They are finally on their way to Manhattan where they will appear in the Tedde shop at Bryant Park. If you are in the city, stop in for a look-see!

bears2.jpg

bears3.jpg

So there is the biggest reason, aside from general laziness, haha. In publishing news, I have FINALLY finished the cover for Miss Tutu’s Star, yaaaaay!!!! A relief to have my part of that project finished, for sure. You won’t find it on the shelves until next fall, but look for it then. Don’t worry, I’ll remind you when it comes out!

The Open Studios at the Mill at Salmon Falls is this weekend, so I’ve been struggling to get things done for that, agh! This year’s ornament is an elephant, Enid and her Precious Peanut. They will be few and far between (see reason above) but I have tried my best to get enough done for people, and here are some preview photos:

My daughter Erin will be selling her cute wares there too – check them out here!
For more information about the mill and the artists there, you can visit their website: millartists.com.

In other news, the lovely Brooke featured my muppet prints in her blog a couple of weeks ago. Check it out here. Thanks, Brooke!

Hall of Fame, haha!

Monday, September 7th, 2009

Well, I promised long ago that I would post pictures from the East Muskingum School District Hall of Fame Ceremony (whew, that is a mouthful!) when I got them, and I am finally doing that. So here is one from my speech – I think the superintendent is smiling in the background because my speech was very short.

banquet2.jpg

Next is a shot of the three of us honorees – Denny Elliott, Ginny Bradley, and myself. You can’t see that on the plaque it says that I went to the University of Maine for sociology rather than zoology…

And last, but not least, is a picture of my groovy cool award clock! Now look closely at the inscription – I haven’t taken Latin since high school, but even I know that it should be “alumna” instead of “alumnus“… Pretty amusing coming from a scholarship dinner award! Maybe they didn’t actually know to whom they were giving the award. They did spell my name right though, so that is something!

In other news, I still have the cover to do for Miss Tutu’s Star – still waiting for my editor to look at the sketches I sent a month ago. I guess they must not be in a huge hurry! In the meantime, I have a huge order of bears to make for tedde, and I really have to start on ornaments – agh! This year’s designs will be elephants and bears. And I would really like to get back to doing some oil painting… And I am heading back out to Ohio next week to see the Elder P’s. So there you have it, my life in a nutshell!

Sneak Peek

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

Oh my goodness, what a summer this has been. I apologize for not updating more frequently! Family issues have involved trips to Ohio, New York City, and Wisconsin, and deadlines have been looming. But I am doing pretty well on the deadline – just have the cover left to do, yaay! Here is a sneak peek of a couple of pages of “Miss Tutu’s Star!”

I will be very happy when I get this all finished…

I now have a flickr account, for anyone who might be interested. In it now are many many pictures from our recent family reunion in America’s Dairyland – you’ll find boring photos of family members, but also trolls, gnomes and badgers! Here is an example of a sneaky gnome, perhaps getting ready to attack your ankles!

Check it out here. But don’t say I didn’t warn you there would be lots of pictures of family!

So in two weeks we are taking our little girl to the Big City so she can learn how to do zombie make-up and bloody accident wounds and such (also high fashion-type stuff) at the Make-Up Designory School (or MUD, as it is more familiarly known). I can’t wait to have her practice on me! Expect future photos of crazy stuff!

Well, that’s it for now – I will try to be better about this!

Chick this out!

Saturday, April 11th, 2009

Ugh, that was lame, haha! But I, or should I say my easter chick, has been featured on a blog! Thanks go to Miss Knits – you can view it here. Yippee!

By the way, I finally have the go-ahead for the ballet book pictures (well, pretty much – still have to change one bit at the end but it won’t take long) so I will have to start getting down to it. I’d really like to get it pretty much finished before our big family reunion in Wisconsin in July…

What a cake!

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Ok, so I did a school visit last week, and you would not believe the cake that one of the mothers ordered for the class in honor of my book, Seymour Slug Starts School.

It was made by Owen at Confection Art and I have to say it is probably one of the few slug cakes ever made. Look, he even has a little backpack! What’s more, it even tasted good…

I have some new prints up on etsy, just in time for valentine’s day! Check it out here. Here is a preview – the first two are Yetis in love, and then we have octopi.

Still waiting on the go-ahead to start the art for the ballet book…

New Year’s Resolutions?

Friday, January 9th, 2009

Here I am again, making resolutions I probably won’t keep. It seems to me that last year I made a resolution to blog more frequently… hmmm. Well, that is one of my resolutions for this year too. In addition, I resolve to sending out my manuscripts again and again, by golly, until maybe someone will bite. And also to send out art samples to art directors – the postcards I sent out last year seemed to generate zero results, so I guess I’ll try samples now.

One excuse I give for not writing more steadily is, well, you see, in December we had this ice storm… We lost our power on a Thusday night, and I heard crashing trees and branches all night long. In the morning we found that there was quite a bit of damage – not to the house, but to the trees and power lines – power was out all over the area. Well, it turned out we didn’t get it back until Tuesday evening – UGH! But as you know, many people were without power for almost two weeks, so when you put things into perspective we were fairly lucky. We also had a friend who lent us his generator for a couple of hours so we could take showers – yay!

Anyway, somehow that just put me way behind in everything, what with the holidays looming and all. Then we had a big snow storm. Then we had another big snow storm. Etc. etc. And I had this order of 50 bears to get done for tedde.com….So that is my excuse! I’ll try to do better in the future. Here are some photos:

This was our light and heat for 4 1/2 days!

Then the snow came…

But it looked really pretty with our christmas lights!

Open studio pictures

Thursday, December 11th, 2008

Thought I’d post some pictures from this year’s Open Studio Days. i was joined this year by my darling daughter, who was selling her Chubbikins and prints (see her website here and here, and her blog here!)

A lot of people came through, and seemed to be buying books this year. As might be expected in today’s economy, the ornaments were not exactly flying out the door – of course this year I made tons of them, haha! Oh well, such is life. You will probably see them pop up in my etsy shop soon…

Octopi with new holly berry headbands, and my new yetis and sasquatches (you can buy them from my etsy shop, haha!)
