One monkey and a whole lotta bears

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Well, in case anyone has been wondering where the heck I’ve been and why I haven’t posted here in months, here is the reason:

bears4.jpg

yes, I have been making bears, bears and more bears! They are finally on their way to Manhattan where they will appear in the Tedde shop at Bryant Park. If you are in the city, stop in for a look-see!

So there is the biggest reason, aside from general laziness, haha. In publishing news, I have FINALLY finished the cover for Miss Tutu’s Star, yaaaaay!!!! A relief to have my part of that project finished, for sure. You won’t find it on the shelves until next fall, but look for it then. Don’t worry, I’ll remind you when it comes out!

The Open Studios at the Mill at Salmon Falls is this weekend, so I’ve been struggling to get things done for that, agh! This year’s ornament is an elephant, Enid and her Precious Peanut. They will be few and far between (see reason above) but I have tried my best to get enough done for people, and here are some preview photos:

My daughter Erin will be selling her cute wares there too – check them out here!
For more information about the mill and the artists there, you can visit their website: millartists.com.

In other news, the lovely Brooke featured my muppet prints in her blog a couple of weeks ago. Check it out here. Thanks, Brooke!

Hall of Fame, haha!

Monday, September 7th, 2009

Well, I promised long ago that I would post pictures from the East Muskingum School District Hall of Fame Ceremony (whew, that is a mouthful!) when I got them, and I am finally doing that. So here is one from my speech – I think the superintendent is smiling in the background because my speech was very short.

Next is a shot of the three of us honorees – Denny Elliott, Ginny Bradley, and myself. You can’t see that on the plaque it says that I went to the University of Maine for sociology rather than zoology…

And last, but not least, is a picture of my groovy cool award clock! Now look closely at the inscription – I haven’t taken Latin since high school, but even I know that it should be “alumna” instead of “alumnus“… Pretty amusing coming from a scholarship dinner award! Maybe they didn’t actually know to whom they were giving the award. They did spell my name right though, so that is something!

In other news, I still have the cover to do for Miss Tutu’s Star – still waiting for my editor to look at the sketches I sent a month ago. I guess they must not be in a huge hurry! In the meantime, I have a huge order of bears to make for tedde, and I really have to start on ornaments – agh! This year’s designs will be elephants and bears. And I would really like to get back to doing some oil painting… And I am heading back out to Ohio next week to see the Elder P’s. So there you have it, my life in a nutshell!

Let me try this again…

I have to say I have great admiration for people who actually update their blogs on a regular basis… Man. OK, it’s been about six months since my last entry, hahaha, so let me try to catch up on things artsy and stitchy and booky. First the book department:

I finished the art for The Twelve Days of Springtime, and then I finished the corrections (oops! some spelling errors on my part :-P , and some last minute changes on the publisher’s part. Lots of discussion on national flags, rainbow flags, earth day, etc. etc…) so that project is done. Yaaay!! (picture Kermit the Frog waving arms about) My current project is illustrating a story about a little girl taking ballet lessons, called Miss Tutu’s Star. I have finished the preliminary sketches and am waiting to hear whether I am even on the right track, or whether I have to start all over again, ugh! We shall see. Soon, hopefully. Here are a couple of the sketches:

Ok, now for the artsy stuff. I was contacted by a woman from Eugene, OR who was running for Slug Queen, hahaha! Seems they have this big competition every year for the honor of Slimy Queendom, those crazy Eugeners, and she was wondering if I might donate some of my sluggy wares so that she could bribe the former queens, and so better her chances of winning. So I sent out some stuff, and then she mentioned a Slug Queen exhibit at a local gallery. I did a little painting for it and lo and behold, it won 1st Place for Out-of-State entries! I’m not quite sure it deserved such an honor – there were some pretty great things in the show – but check it out here at slugqueeneugene. Just click on the glass slug with the Art Salon Gallery label, and be sure to check out the rest of the site too – it’s pretty funny! And, my contact, Marie Slugtoinette, won the title!

And now for the stitchy part! I was contacted this summer (spring?) by someone who is opening a shop in Manhattan in October that will sell teddy bears only. She asked if I would do a limited edition bear for them, and I agreed. So at least part of the summer was spent making bears! You can find them online here at tedde.com. And here are some pictures:

In the next couple of days I’ll update you on another project I’ve been working on – a fairy house version of Cinderella’s castle!
